Fall "Salt Dough"...

Salt Dough... a fun, easy and inexpensive lil' craft project.  These pictures are from 4 years ago but I pulled them back out to share  with you.  I still get lots of e-mails about my salt dough ornaments so here goes the "how to".

2 c. All Purpose Flour
1 c. Salt
1 c. Water

Mix the salt and flour then add water.
Add a lil' flour if sticky, a lil' extra water if to dry.

Shape using your hands or cookie cutters - these are all free form.

Add details with toothpicks and insert wire at this time.

Bake at 325 degrees for 1.5 hours.  Adjust if necessary depending on thickness.

Paint to your liking...

Then glaze for a "not so harsh" look.  Spray with polyurethane to seal.

Ta Da - that's it!  Great bowl fillers, ornaments, package tie-ons, gifts  - well, the list goes on and on!

Salt dough is great fun for kids as well as us "Big" kids too.

Have Fun and Happy Fall!

Happy February and Valentine Salt Dough...

...It's February 1st and in Kentucky it feels like April 1st.  It is so warm here - can't say that we have even had a winter this year.  But none the less, it is still the month of Valentine's Day and my BIG birthday (o.k. - let jus' forget I even mentioned that) so I thought I'd re post something that I get e-mails about all the time - my salt dough ornaments.  Now, when I had the shop - I made them all the time - I haven't made any for a while - but they are fun - super easy - great crafting fun for kids - and make the perfect lil' gifts.  Use them for tie-ons for packages, make your own seasonal tree ornaments, sweet lil' necklaces for the classroom crush, well the list goes on and on.

Just click HERE and you'll get all the instructions you need.

Happy Creating and Have Fun!

It's that time again... time for Easter Salt Dough

I feel like you all probably get tired of hearing me talk about salt dough ornaments. But I get so many e-mails (which I loooooove hearing from you all) about how to make them. So as usual, I haven't got to make any for myself yet - this is a picture from last year. But I'm just reminding you to give you some ideas while you are preparing for the upcoming season.
Now, since I don't have enough smarts to "link-up" to the post from last year with all the instructions - I'll give you the long way around - go to the history section in the side bar and click on March of 2009 and it'll be there. Maybe one of my super smart computer friends out there can tell me how to link to it without re posting it. I am not computer savvy.
Some spring Salt Dough ideas: eggs, nest, birds, chicks, baskets, flowers, carrots, bunnies and the list goes on.
Happy Creating!

Who says...

...hearts have to be "red" anyway? Well, these aren't - they are pink and chocolate brown - jus' what my friend, Carolyn, ordered (thank you sweet Carolyn). So I'm sharing with you all so you can have yet - even more salt dough making ideas!
Large monogram hearts...
...small polka dot hearts...
...I thought the colors jus' turned out really pretty. Think Valentine's Day gifts for classmates, they would make super cute party favors or tied on to a gift you'll be giving!

HAPPY SALT DOUGH MAKING!
Have a blessed Sunday,
Cathy

Valentine Salt Dough...

Another holiday means more fun salt dough projects. Actually I'm cheating a lil' bit and showing you pics from last year 'cause I haven't had time to make mine yet!!! But here are a couple of ideas you could use while you are creating your own!
You know the recipe by "heart" now I'm sure but here it goes again...
2 cups all purpose flour
1 cup salt
mix well and add
1 cup warm water
Form dough and shape with your hands or use cookie cutters
Bake at about 325 degrees for a couple of hours - give or take
Insert loops in the top if you'd like to make lil' small charms...
Paint them to your liking...

Here are some I monogrammed, polka-dotted, and glittered to make lil' necklaces. They were for all the young girls in Casen's kindergarten class last year...cute and inexpensive.

And for those of you who do seasonal trees - they would make the perfect ornaments or tie-ons for gifts...
And I haven't tried it yet but I think it would be really cute to make small ones painted in pastel colors that looks like that candy - you know - "kiss me", "u r cute", "I luv u". Place them in a sweet dish for a lil' Valentine decoration. And you'll keep your new diet in check - because you can't eat them - you know, cute on the eyes, not on the thighs -hehe
Everybody have a blessed day and
Happy Creating!

Salt Dough Valentines...

...a cute, inexpensive way to do a lil' something special. You all know how I love salt dough - the possibilities are jus' endless. Well I know many of you all, like myself, are trying to get valentines made for our lil' ones. My son and I talked about a few different things we could make for all the girls in his kindergarten class and we decided a necklace would be fun and they could keep it.

O.K. - I must be honest, a lot of this has to do with ME having "the need" to do something bright colored, polka-dotted, glittery (ya know, all the things lil' boys don't like)and besides, he's at that age when girls "are gross". Jus' kiddin' - he really likes his "girl - friends" but he doesn't want any "girlfriends".

So this is our lil' project we completed that he can share with his kindergarten "buddies" we'll call them.

You all know the recipe:

2c. all purpose flour
1c. salt
1c. warm water

Mix well and shape in the form of a heart with your hands. You can use cookie cutters of course - I like them kind of imperfect looking.

Be sure and make a loop out of wire and insert before baking. Bake at 325 degrees for approximately 1 hour.

Let cool.

We base coated ours red but of course pink would be cute or lavender. Actually you could paint them like that candy you buy that is all different pastel shades with the cute lil' words "Kiss Me", "I Luv U", "Be Mine" - but Casen said "Mom, that's embarrassing."

So I simply put some pink polka dots on there as well as the initial of each lil' girl in his class.

I clear coated with modge podge and sprinkled a lil' clear glitter on top.

So there you have it - a bowl full of fun...

...and a lil' love to boot.

Now tomorrow, I've got to come up with something for the boys - any last minute ideas?

Happy Valentines Week my friends!!!
Blessings, Cathy

Snowmen....

...salt dough ornaments!!!

Remember the recipe -
2c. all purpose flour
1c. salt
mix dry ingredients
add 1c. warm water

Roll and shape into a ball - flatten - shape a piece for the nose - wet the two pieces in order for them to adhere. Insert wire and bake at 325 degrees for an hour and a half.

Then the fun part - paint them anyway you wish!

These snowmen heads have been lightly glazed with antiquing medium as well as painted with "twinkles" a transparent glitter paint.

Then clear coated and tied with ribbon - HOW CUTE! You can make them in all sizes - lil' bitty ones would be so cute painted up pink for a little girls room. Tie up the tree with pink and green ribbon and you would have a one of a kind.

These are a few I made for "Baby's first Christmas" - simply roll (I mean in your hands) out a separate ball and attach to your flat piece. Paint the background pink or blue - leave a spot at the top to personalize with a name and year.

The green ones jus' say Merry Christmas - so they would work for anyone. This is a great project for those who have a lot of people to buy for (i.e. co-workers, teachers, classmates). They are easy, cute and fun to make especially with your children. I'll try and make more later - you can make sheep, footballs (look right in the sidebar) - jus' about anything you can imagine. Of course, you can use cookie cutters - but I like them jus' a lil' imperfect. Just shape in your hands and I promise you - you can't mess them up. Have lots of fun and happy creating! If you have any questions - just e-mail me - I'll be happy to help anyway I can.

Blessings to you all - have a great week!
